Break

The weeks during that first month I was at the academy all followed a similar routine. The first few days of the week were taken up with practicing the two Destructia patterns, progressing from sending swathes of blue fire across the lake, to trying to aim and focus the blast of energy at smaller and smaller targets, that would end up further and further away. It became a not-so friendly competition, with me trailing just behind Frennic in second place. I was no longer exhausted after each run after class and could even keep up with the bulk of the runners, although I was heavily subsidised through my nefarious use of the first Destructia pattern to help relieve some of the strain on my body. The seemingly rapid improvement in my fitness just alienated me from the rest of the class further, to the point that no one other than Thain and the Seer monk even looked in my direction during those classes.

Later in the day we would be sent to the library, instructed to study the history of the patterns we were learning with Thain and I specifically directed to learn about the history of the Vin empire. Thankfully Thain and I often had Broch to help guide us around the library and the three of us would often retreat to the study hall together, Thain and I making notes on the various calculations for direct or indirect energies required and Broch would work on his fabrication research. Then as daylight began to fade, I would bid my farewells to my friends and head down into Isale town, to Brin’s tavern. The work was hard, but Brin kept me busy enough either serving patrons or cleaning, which made the shifts go quickly. I began to realise that past his hard exterior was a gentle soul. He’d sit opposite me, his hands cradling a wine glass, usually in silence, passing only a few comments here and there. Eventually Broch and Thain began coming down to the tavern to visit while I was working, sometimes even bringing Kit as well. They often used it as a second study space, bringing their paper and books to read. Brin would give them a hard look, and would grumble to me about ‘that gaggle of rakes, rogues and reprobates’, but I often caught him cleaning down their usual table if he saw them sauntering through the square, pulling extra stools to the table for the group. When the nights were quiet, I would call him over to sit with us, and while he did so begrudgingly, he would inevitably pull out a deck of cards, dealing them to us all far more deftly than you would expect for a man with hands built like bricks.

Needless to say, Brin quickly became a
